English is ‘the language everybody shares’ but it is ‘my native language’: language ideologies and interpersonal relationships among students in internationalizing higher education

This paper examines the roles of different language ideologies—sets common-sense beliefs about and its speakers—in students’ identity construction negotiation in context internationalizing higher education. Along with increasing diversity students as English speakers, ideologies have been critically examined for potential contribution to inequalities among students. I analyze two focus group discussions from international English-medium instruction master’s programs at a Finnish university. explore talk using critical discursive psychology illuminate possible intersections between situated construction, paying attention ideological dilemmas alongside negotiation.
